Co-Parenting with Respect โ€” Even When It's Hard

Written by the Apple & Oak social workers, Laura & John ๐ŸŒฟ ยท free to read and share

Co-parenting after separation is one of the hardest jobs there is. These principles protect your child โ€” and your peace:

The child is never the messenger. Never ask them to carry words, money, or blame between parents. Adults talk to adults.

Keep it boring and predictable. Same pickup times, same rules where possible, calm handovers. Predictability is a gift to a child's nervous system.

Speak about the other parent with respect โ€” or silence. Your child is half of that person. When you insult them, the child feels insulted too.

Choose battles carefully. Different isn't dangerous. Save your energy for what truly matters: safety, health, love.

Get support for the hard feelings. Anger and grief are real โ€” share them with friends, a counsellor, or our team, not with the children.

Need someone to talk to about this? Laura (for mothers) and John (for fathers) are here โ€” free and confidential.
